”So love me like you do, lo-lo-love me like you do/Love me like you do, lo-lo-love me like you do/Touch me like you do, to-to-touch me like you do/What are you waiting for?” The whole world knows the refrain to this Ellie Goulding smash, from the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack in 2015. The British singer does not exactly lack famous songs: Lights (2010), Burn (2013), How Long Will I Love You (2013), the Kygo collaboration First Time (2017) and Close to Me (2018) with Diplo and Swae Lee, to name a few. She’s one of the most consistently reliable suppliers of hits the past decade and these days a global star.
Ellie Goulding dropped her debut single on an indie label in 2009 and soon signed to Polydor Records. Then things happened at a rapid pace. She won the BBC Sound of 2010 poll and also the Critics’ Choice Award at the 2010 Brit Awards. As influences she has named artists such as Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush and Björk, as well as a lot of rap music. In an interview with The Guardian earlier this year she said: ”I’m always fighting to work with producers coming up with whole new soundscapes. My voice doesn’t sound like anyone’s in the world, so I’ve got that to my advantage, and I can also manipulate my voice as part of the track or make it into a sample. That’s how I stay not sounding like anything else – I have that locked, for ever.”
