We got to know him at the end of 2016 with the extremely catchy, and eventually Grammy nominated, single Crew. GoldLink is the rapper from the DMV area, which means D.C./Maryland/Virginia. He was born in Washington D.C., raised in Maryland and Virginia, and his first album At What Cost, containing the hit Crew, is sort of a tribute to his roots in this region.
GoldLink began his music career performing under his birth name D’Anthony Curtis. In 2013 he switched to GoldLink when he dropped several tracks on SoundCloud. Over the years he’s worked with producers such as Rick Rubin (who gave him the advice: ”If you focus on art everything else will fall into place”) and Kaytranada. Further he’s collaborated with everyone from Christina Aguilera to Miguel. This summer he released his ambitious and playful second album Diaspora featuring guest appearances from Pusha T, Khalid, Tyler, The Creator and others. Where At What Cost had been a love letter to his home-turf, Diaspora is, as GQ put it, ”an ode to the international”.
